A Colossal Waste of Time

Wow. What a colossal waste of time.

Of course, nowhere in those 4800 hours of training or that large stack of impressively sized books are they taught critical thinking or the scientific method. Double blind experimental protocols are also right out.

Scary Trousers

I enjoyed this recent clip from Neil Gaiman's appearance at San Diego Comic Con 2007 in which explains how he got the nickname "Scary Trousers."

Indiana Jones KotCS

So, I watched Indiana Jones IV at the theater last night and am considering asking for about $8 of my $10 ticket back from Lucas/Spielberg/Ford. I was a technicality away from walking out of the theater. At one point I turned to a companion and said, "If they [do a specific ridiculous and unreasonable thing] then I'm walking out of the theater." And they technically did not do that thing, but only technically.

I would go down the laundry list of ridiculous and unreasonable things about this movie, but I don't want to ruin the big reveals for you.

I think you should certainly see it just to know that kind of pain and prove to yourself that you're alive. You should try not to spend $10 on seeing it, though. This is a Netflix.

Temple of Doom notes

The following casting notes were made while watching Temple of Doom:

Ric Young, who plays one of the Chinese henchmen in the movie, is also the Chinese General from American Gangster.

Philip Tan, who also played a Chinese henchman, has done a lot of other stuff. Including--most exciting to me--the gorilla in Congo.

Now on to Raiders.

Indiana Jones pregame

I've traveled back east for the weekend. We've just started watching Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and plan to follow that up with Raiders of the Lost Ark and Last Crusade before heading off to the theater for a viewing of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It should be pretty awesome. I love the musical number that opens Temple of Doom. I expect there to be an "Indy can barely reach [something]" moment in the new movie.

If my last name were Manning, I'd be awesome.

While I'm disappointed that the Colts did not win the Super Bowl this year, I have to say that the Manning family genetics are freaking amazing. That game was fantastic. Go Giants!

Randi will discontinue the prize in 2010.

According to the most recent Swift newsletter, James Randi will discontinue the $1M paranormal challenge in March of 2010 in order to free up the funds for other endeavors. There is no word yet on what those endeavors will be. The would-be psychics out there still have two years to make their attempt.

I have mixed feelings about this. It's certainly become clear to me that having the prize around does little to deter woo woo. On the other hand, there's something very satisfying about jumping into discussions with, "Well, I've got $1M that says you're wrong."

Consider again, that dot...

Today is the 11th anniversary of Carl Sagan's death.

I want "The Pale Blue Dot" to be read at my funeral.
